 > South Sudan is faced with enormous challenges as a newly independent state according to the Secretary-General of the United Nations.

 > The country has split from its northern neighbour, the Republic of Sudan.
 > The people of South Sudan have been celebrating "independence" and the formation of the "world’s newest nation".

 > The new country’s flag was raised at a ceremony in the capital Juba on Saturday morning.
South Sudan became "independent" after a referendum in January in which the south voted unanimously to separate from the north of Sudan.
